Provides rental and utility assistance for South Dakota residents. Assistance provided is not a loan and does not have to be paid back. Payment is made directly to the landlord or utility provider on the applicant's behalf. Funding amount is based on need. Must meet the following criteria:
Income qualifications (vary by county)
One or more individuals in the household has qualified for unemployment benefits, experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs or experienced other financial hardship due to, or unexpected hardship.
One or more individuals in the household have a past due utility bill, rent notice, or are able to prove that they are at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

To receive additional funding after their original assistance period has passed applicants should not complete a new application. The opportunity to apply for additional funding will appear on the applicant's dashboard when they become eligible to reapply. Applicants are also free to reach out to their caseworker directly with questions about additional funding.

Mortgage and utility assistance for South Dakota residents through Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF).
Mortgage assistance: This program is a LOAN program, up to a maximum of $25,000, will be in the form of a zero-interest loan, payable when the property is either transferred/sold or refinanced. Applicants will be required to contact their mortgage service provider to determine if other alternatives are available. Homeowners in need of immediate assistance should contact their loan servicer to discuss alternative options to prevent foreclosure or a HUD-approved Counseling Agency.
Available utility assistance is not a loan, but a grant, so utilities will NOT have to be paid back.
Must meet the following criteria:
Income qualifications (vary by county)
Household has experienced a significant financial hardship due to COVID-19 on or after January 21, 2020. (Must be COVID-related)
Household can demonstrate a risk of housing instability or homelessness which may include a past due utility or mortgage notice.

Oyate Health Center provides primary medical care, outpatient clinic, and urgent care.
Additional outpatient services that are provided on site include optometry, pharmacy (Prescription Drug Take Back Site, blue drop-box in pharmacy), laboratory, radiology, dental, physical therapy, podiatry, and social services.
Oyate Health Center has 2 sweat lodges that are by sign in only. Call for details.
Oyate Health Center provides direct health services to Native Americans and also provide contract health care services and referrals to those that are eligible within IHS requirements. This means that if a patient is enrolled in a federally recognized tribe or can prove lineage of descent of an enrolled tribal member; the patient may receive direct care services at Oyate Health Center.
Prescription Assistance - Any Native American enrolled in a federally recognized tribe can receive prescription expense assistance at any I.H.S. facility.

After business hours, The Salvation Army of Brookings County works with the Brookings County Sheriff or City Police to help individuals and families in the case of an emergency/immediate need.
