Additional utility charges and fees limited to the availability of grant funds. - Transportation Costs Assistance with bus passes or gasoline for verifiable medical appointments or new employment. - Medical Assistance may include emergency prescription medications, specialty physician services, hospitalizations, and insurance premiums. Services may require prior approval. - Burial or Cremation Pennington County residents without resources or family members to assist.

The Auditor's Office also handles requests for one-time economic assistance that may include Rent, Utility for current bills, May be available for water, lights, heating, Medical, hospitalization, and burial assistance requires pre-approval if not for emergency services. All other resources must have been exhausted first. Assistance does require payback and county lien is filed until paid in full.

According to SD Codified Law - APPLICANTS MUST Apply and ACCEPT Assistance from ALL Other Organizations (The Journey Home, Salvation Army, local churches, family, bank etc.) BEFORE county will consider assistance (according to SDCL). Other organizations will assist without a repayment requirement, unlike county assistance which files a Lien against the individual(s) for any assistance received. Individual(s) applying or living in the same household cannot have an active warrant or unpaid lien. ANY Applicant who is unemployed without good cause will be denied. Federal poverty income guidelines apply. One-time assistance allowed in a 12 month period for economic assistance. Assistance must be repaid, and failure to repay disqualifies from further assistance. - Medical Assistance is only for emergency hospitalizations for which the hospital provided the County a notice of hospitalization. Any other hospital or medical bills must be approved before the procedure is undertaken. Failure to sign up for health care insurance if that option is available and affordable will disqualify someone from assistance. No assistance with prescriptions, medical equipment or therapy(s). Burial All assistance received becomes a poor relief lien and is to be paid back to the county.

The American Red Cross works in partnership with Military Aid Societies to provide financial assistance to eligible applicants. The office may help with rent, utilities, prescriptions, emergency medical expenses, county burials and funerals, eye care referrals, and admittance fees for voluntary mental, alcohol, or drug treatment to the Human Services Center in Yankton, SD.

The county may be able to assist with the following: Medical Assistance: for indigent residents of Lawrence County who do not have health insurance or any other means of paying medical bills. Minnehaha County residents can also receive assistance with Shelter, Gasoline or bus ticket for transients/nonresidents stranded here and needing to get home. Out of town travel assistance is not offered to MC residents. Identification and or birth certificate (if needed for the purposes of obtaining employment/housing). The majority of assistance provided is in the form of a no-interest loan for which a lien is created. The client does not receive any bill from County but is expected to repay the debt, starting in a time frame created by the caseworker. Applicants can choose to walk-in to the office or receive a phone call to complete an interview. Those applying for transportation, medications or ID/BC assistance should come into the office to apply.
